BERKELEY, CA (UroToday.com) - By the turn of the 19th century, the chief cause of death in acute and chronic paraplegia was recognized as renal failure attributable to UTIs caused by inappropriate treatment.

This problem was addressed in the UK during the First World War. Although the problem was not solved, the lessons learned served as the beginning of successful management of the bladder which reached its fruition after the Second World War.
