AUA white paper on catheter-associated urinary tract infections: Definitions and significance in the urologic patient

BERKELEY, CA USA - The AUA white paper on catheter-associated urinary tract infections: Definitions and significance in the urologic patient was approved by the AUA Board of Directors at its October 2014 meeting. Following the Board’s previous recommendation that the AUA develop materials related to catheterization, a white paper workgroup was organized under the leadership of Dr. Timothy Averch. The workgroup noted that while health care in general has increased its focus on catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) prevention and the inappropriate use of catheters, much of this guidance does not apply to urologic patients. Therefore, the white paper delves into this subject and provides pertinent definitions pertaining to CAUTIs.
