AUA 2017: A Randomized, Controlled Trial of Active vs. Passive Voiding Trials

Boston, MA (UroToday.com) James Mills, MD, MSCR from the University of Virginia presented a poster entitled “A Randomized, Controlled Trial of Active vs. Passive Voiding Trials.” Dr. Mills reported the results of a trial involving 274 patients who were enrolled at a single center. Patients in the active voiding trial who had their bladder filled prior to catheter removal had 64% fewer urinary tract infections than patients in the passive voiding trial group. No differences were found in rates of urinary retention or time to hospital discharge. The audience commented on barriers to implementing active voiding trials, including institutional policies on not disrupting closed catheter systems.
