AUA 2017: Evaluation of a Surgical Outcomes with Photoselective Greenlight XPS Laser Vaporization of the Prostate in High Medical Risk Men with Benign Prostatic Enlargement: A Multicenter study.

Boston, MA (UroToday.com) Modern-day urologists face more complex patients whom require surgical relief due to the increase in the elderly population with greater disease severity and the increase use of anticoagulation therapy. In this moderated poster presentation, Dr. Rajih and his team seek to evaluate the safety and short-term outcomes of photo selective vaporization of the prostate using Greenlight XPSTM in the treatment of high medically risk (HMR) men.

In this retrospective study, 941 patients were analyzed between 5 centers and were divided into 2 groups according to their medical risks based on APA-PS. Patients who were considered high risk, APA-PS greater than or equal to 3, were older, had more corbities, and had higher use of anticoagulants.

In conclusion, high risk patients who undergo GL-XPS experience symptoms improvements and have postoperative complications similar to less-risked patients in the study, APA-PS I/II. The authors high recommend the use of GL-XPS in the treatment of BPH, specifically in high-risk patients because it produces safe and effective short-come outcomes.
