Boston, MA (UroToday.com) The technique of Prostate Fusion Biopsy is more readily used due to its increasing popularity. However, one technical difficulty this procedure encounters is fecal matter when biopsing. The aim of the study was to improve intra-operative prostate visualization and decrease fecal contamination by using a simple ileostomy adapter.

Dr. Gudeloglu and his team from Gazi University modified the technique by placing an empty condom into the rectum, filled it with 100ml ultrasound gel, and fixed it to the anus by using a standard ileostomy. The original technique just employed a 120ml filled saline condom directly placed into the rectum.

The result of the study showed a median PSA level of 5.2ng/ml and mean prostate volume of 60cm^3 when using the modified technique. In conclusion, MRI and transrectal USG guided Fusion Biopsy seems to be feasible and safe method. The modified technique employed by the authors improved intra-operative prostate visualization and able to perform prostate function biopsy without fecal content within surgical field.
