The Impact of Secondhand Smoke on the Development of Kidney Stone Disease Is Not Inferior to That of Smoking: A Longitudinal Cohort Study - Beyond the Abstract

This longitudinal cohort study investigated the association between smoking, secondhand smoke (SHS) exposure, and the development of kidney stone disease (KSD) in Taiwan.

The odds ratio (OR) of KSD was higher in the never-smokers with SHS exposure (OR, 1.622) and ever-smokers groups (OR, 1.282) than in the never-smokers with no SHS exposure group after adjustment of confounders. Therefore, both smoking and SHS exposure were associated with an increased risk of developing KSD. The study concludes that efforts to reduce smoking and SHS exposure may lead to better health outcomes and a decreased burden of KSD.
