Illumination Matters Part III: Impact of Light Obstruction on Illuminance from Flexible Ureteroscopes - A Comparative PEARLS Analysis - Beyond the Abstract

In everyday flexible ureteroscopy, a common situation faced by endourologists is that of the kidney calyceal neck partially blocking the light in calyces that are difficult to reach. Flexible ureteroscopy illumination is thus affected. How different ureteroscopes fare in this situation is not known.

The idea behind this study was thus born, intending to explore this clinical question and assist endourologists in choosing their ureteroscope. One should consider the illumination properties of various ureteroscopes and the location of the pathology to be treated.

This publication forms part III of a groundbreaking four-part comprehensive review of illumination in flexible ureteroscopes:1-4 exploring illumination under saline and uncovering stark differences in the illumination performance of various ureteroscopes, which has not been done before.

We invite you to read this open-access publication and apply the findings to your next flexible ureteroscopy.
