AUA 2011 - Trends in surgical management of BPH - Session Highlights

WASHINGTON, DC USA (UroToday.com) - A 90 item questionnaire to assess surgical management of BPH was sent to urologists in the AUA database and the Veteran Health system;

600 of 5,500 urologists responded (response rate of 11%). The region of the country, academic versus non-academic center and age of urologist had no influence on the techniques utilized by urologists. Reimbursement and cost were never reported as a reason to use or not use a technique.

Overall, the five leading surgical therapies were open prostatectomy (78%); TURP (73%); PVP (58%); TURis Button TURP (24%) and; Bipolar TURP (20%).

In conclusion, Dr. Lee indicated the primary decision making factor is which technique is based on evidence-based medicine and good outcomes with minimally invasive side effects.
