BERKELEY, CA (UroToday.com) - This is a review paper that focuses on the pre-procedural evaluation of patients prior to prostatic arterial embolization (PAE). Important details of the clinical and laboratory investigations are highlighted when BPH patients are being studied for this procedure to relieve LUTS. In this publication we provide the flowchart on how we evaluate patients, how we perform the clinical evaluation, and what exams we perform on patients prior to PAE. All the inclusion and exclusion criteria are reviewed, with critical consideration given to doubtful clinical findings such as patients with small prostates, those without obstruction on urofluxometry, as well as how to deal with prostate medication before and after embolization, amongst others.
Interventional radiologists will find this review to be a very useful guide thorough the process of patient selection and pre-procedural patient evaluation.
