Trends in Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction in Chile Between 2010 and 2020 with Special Focus on Penile Prostheses - Beyond the Abstract

This study evaluated the demand for the available treatments for ED in Chile in the decade 2010-20. PD5 inhibitors increased their demand by 70% in 10 years, selling more than 13 million pills a year only in Chile. Intracavernosal agents remained stable. Penile Implants increased in the 10-year period; however, the number of Penile Prosthesis actually implanted in Chile is considered to be extremely low, with a mean of only 125 implants per year.

We calculated that there should be a high potential demand for penile implants, approximately 77.000 men only in Chile, but very few finally have access to this technology. The paper suggests some possible explanations for this huge gap between the potential demand and the real demand. The Urologic community should work together with the industry and with patient associations to facilitate access to penile implants, especially in emerging countries such as Chile.
