Evaluation of factors influencing the natural history of nocturia in elderly subjects: Results from the Fujiwara-kyo study - Abstract

PURPOSE: The goal of the study was to evaluate the natural history of nocturia and to determine factors influencing the incidence or remission of nocturia.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The subjects were 4427 volunteers aged ≥65 years old who participated in the Fujiwara-kyo study. The prevalence of nocturia at baseline and one year later were evaluated. The incidence and remission rate of nocturia were calculated and factors influencing these results were evaluated based on characteristics including gender, age, BMI, HgA1c, creatinine clearance, lifestyle, comorbidities, depressive status, metabolic syndrome and voiding symptoms. Independent factors were determined by multivariate analysis.

RESULTS: Of the 4427 subjects, 3685 gave complete replies to self-administered questionnaires at baseline and one year later. The prevalence of nocturia at baseline and one year later were 47.0% and 50.3%, respectively, and the incidence and remission rate of nocturia were 20.0% and 15.4%, respectively. Male sex, high BMI, deterioration of voiding symptoms, and new onset OAB were independent factors associated with the incidence of nocturia. Male sex, sum of voiding symptoms, age and new onset OAB were independent negative factors associated with remission of nocturia.

CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of nocturia worsened over time, although nocturia in older subjects progressed dynamically. Male sex, age, BMI, sum of voiding symptoms, deterioration of voiding symptoms, and new onset OAB have an influence on the natural history of nocturia.
