SUFU WM 2015 - Diokno-Lapides Award presentation - Session Highlights

SCOTTSDALE, AZ USA (UroToday.com) - Dr. Michael Chancellor presented the Diokno-Lapides Award to Dr. Georgi Petkov, PhD for his work “TRPM4 channels as promising novel targets for the pharmacological treatment of overactive bladder,” in which protein expression of TRPM4 was studied in human detrusor muscle.

sufu9-phenanthrol infusion resulted in hyperpolarization of TRPM4 channels. The hyperpolarization resulted in attenuated spontaneous phasic contractions in isolated human detrusor muscle. Testing was subsequently extended and replicated in small animal models. The effect of TRPM4 manipulation in smooth muscle was used as a proxy for potential cardiovascular side effects. The lack of change suggests a potential for few cardiovascular side effects for pharmaceuticals targeting TRPM4 channels.

Dr. Petkov's goal is to progress research toward drug development for the treatment of overactive bladder.

Presented at the Society of Urodynamics, Female Pelvic Medicine and Urogenital Reconstruction (SUFU) Winter Meeting - February 24 - 28, 2015 - JW Marriott Camelback Inn Resort & Spa - Scottsdale, AZ USA
