SCOTTSDALE, AZ USA (UroToday.com) - Dr. Eric Rovner introduced Dr. Christopher Chapple as the Lifetime Achievement Award Winner. Dr. Chapple’s talk was entitled “Management of stress urinary incontinence: Have we reached the final frontier?”
One of the greatest issues in treating stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the lack level 1 data to truly assess which surgery is best for a specific patient’s condition. He reviewed the European Association of Urology (EAU) guideline for urinary incontinence and various SUI procedures such as Burch procedures, bladder neck suspensions, and slings (biologic and synthetic). The SISTER Trial was discussed which demonstrated a higher success rate with pubovaginal sling as compared to a Burch procedure for SUI. The TOMUS Trial showed equivalent success between transobturator and retropubic slings. Dr. Chapple discussed tissue engineering as a promising direction for the development of future treatment options.
