CHICAGO, IL USA (UroToday) - In contrast to poster 104 of community dwelling women...this smaller study included 143 inner city patients from the Bronx. Inner city was defined as 20% or greater poverty rate, 50% or greater unemployment, or half the median income.
Current literature supports a higher prevalence of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse among white females. This patient population represented: Hispanics, African Americans, Caribbean and African immigrants. Using the same questionnaire given during a four-month period at a gynecology clinic, (one in English and one in Spanish) the Spanish-speaking patients had a higher UI score than those taking the english-speaking questionnaire.
The researchers concluded the Mexican Americans with medical comorbidities who spoke Spanish as their primary language had a higher UI score than other ethnic groups.
