Urgency urinary incontinence is 1 of the symptoms commonly experienced by persons with idiopathic (ie, nonneurogenic) OAB.
Overactive bladder is a symptom complex characterized by urgency (the sudden, compelling desire to void that is difficult to defer), with or without urgency urinary incontinence, often associated with frequency (8 or more micturitions during a 24-hour period), and nocturia. The etiology of OAB is multifactorial and thought to be due to detrusor overactivity and altered bladder afferent nerve activity. Risk factors for OAB include advancing age, obesity, and diabetes. Approximately 17% of adults worldwide suffer from OAB, including approximately 33 million adults in the United States.
