AUA 2011 - Risk factors for upper urinary tract and urethral recurrences after radical cystectomy - Session Highlights

WASHINGTON, DC USA (UroToday.com) - It is unclear how often patients, after radical cystectomy, require upper tract imaging.

The authors evaluated 635 patients undergoing radical cystectomy and determined the risk of upper tract and urethral recurrence. Only 3% of patients had an upper tract recurrence and 3% had a urethral recurrence. The time to upper tract and urethral recurrence was 20 and 30 months, respectively. Male gender, T2 or higher primary stage, concomitant CIS and prostatic urethra involvement were significant risk factors for upper tract recurrence. T2 or higher primary stage, pathological stage >T1and prostatic urethra involvement were significant risk factors for urethral recurrence.

The authors conclude that upper tract and urethral recurrence was low in patients undergoing radical cystectomy, but men and those with prostatic urethral and multifocal CIS were at increased risk.
