[Prostate cancer - screening and early detection]

The primary objectives of population screening for prostate cancer (PCa) are a reduction in mortality due to PCa and a maintained quality of life. Currently, screening for PCa is one of the most controversial topics in the urological literature, and findings have led to strong advice against systematic population-based screening. PCa is usually suspected based on palpation and/or prostate specific antigen levels, and a definitive diagnosis depends on histopathological verification in biopsy cores. Multiparametric MRI is increasingly performed before prostate biopsy.
