Biochemical recurrence criteria after radical prostatectomy. Natural history of the disease - Abstract

OBJECTIVES:To analyze biochemical recurrence criteria, attending to different PSA-cut-points referred in the literature, and to review prostate cancer natural history.

METHODS: Review of the literature through a Medline search.

CONCLUSIONS: A PSA of 0.4 ng/ml followed by a value higher than the first, are the values that better define metastatic progression, while a PSA of 0.2 ng/ml followed by a value higher than the first could be more appropriate to define patients about to receive salvage radiotherapy. Nevertheless we need new markers in order to improve prognostic and natural history knowledge.
