Charlie Wilson brings the message home: “Don’t be afraid to talk about prostate cancer.”

BERKELEY, CA (UroToday.com) - Charlie Wilson is a Grammy® -nominated R&B singer, songwriter, producer, and prostate cancer survivor and now MAP advocate. He shared his story at the MAP events in Atlanta, New York, and Chicago and listened to many men and women in the audience tell theirs.

Charlie WilsonHe admits men don’t like to talk about things pertaining to “manhood” -- including prostate cancer. In his life, it was Charlie’s wife who encouraged him to get the check-up that led to follow-up tests and the diagnosis of prostate cancer. It was his wife who supported him through the treatments, and together they learned how to manage the other aspects of living with cancer. Fortunately for Charlie his cancer was caught early; however, during this time, his father shared that he too was battling this disease and had advanced stage cancer. Charlie wishes he had known about his dad’s diagnosis earlier. His dad did not survive prostate cancer.

“The lesson for me in all this, which I want to share with others, is to not be afraid to speak up. It’s okay to ask questions, to take steps to learn more about prostate cancer, to find out your family history, and to share your own experience with your family and loved ones. There are many resources available to get the conversation started.”
