ORLANDO, FL, USA (UroToday.com) - The insulin pathway and, in particular, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), has been implicated in the development of prostate cancer, and serum IGF-1 levels have been associated with advanced disease as well as mortality from the disease (Rowlands MA et al., Cancer Causes Control)
Alterations in the insulin pathway have been associated with metabolic syndrome as well as with more aggressive prostate cancers (Wu et al., J Cell Biochem, 2006, 99:393). Estradiol may have a role in decreasing IGF-1 and the metabolic syndrome (Bottner M and Wuttke W, Biogerontology, 2006, 7:91). GTx-758, an ERα agonist that is being evaluated for the treatment of advanced prostate cancer, reduces serum total testosterone (T) and free T and increases SHBG (Yu EY et al, 2013 Genitourinary Cancers Symposium, Abstract 104).
