GU Cancers Symposium 2013 - The pathology perspective on available tools for active surveillance

ORLANDO, FL, USA (UroToday.com) - Jesse K. McKenney discussed how pathologists can improve active surveillance management protocols.

First, improvement of individualized Gleason score 7 risk estimates (Gleason score 3+4=7 and 4+3=7). Secondly, better identification of the architectural patterns present in the tumor. The challenge, "If risk estimates are improved, will this impact how biopsy tumor volume is used treatment decision-making?" Dr. McKenney concluded by saying, "Further stratification of a modified Gleason score 7 is possible, however, further studies in large AS cohorts are needed to evaluate the subtle histological differences.".
