Robot assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy in 2013 - Abstract

Robot assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy has surpassed open radical prostatectomy as the most common surgical approach for radical prostatectomy in the United States.

In this article we briefly describe the evolution of this minimally invasive technique. The current diagnostic approaches of multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging and fusion biopsy used in preoperative workup of the patients are discussed, followed by a description of risk stratified athermal nerve sparing approach with total anatomical reconstruction. Finally we present a critical appraisal of the published oncological, continence and potency outcomes.
