A Meeting of Minds: The Role of the SOGUG Conference in Advancing Urologic Cancer Discourse - Cristina Suarez

December 28, 2022

Charles Ryan and Cristina Suarez discuss the importance and relevance of the Spanish Oncology Genito Urinary Group (SOGUG) conference. The conference brings together a variety of specialists including oncologists, urologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists, fostering a high-level discourse on urologic cancer. In 2022, the congress boasts 44 speakers and has been positively received. Dr. Suarez expresses their eagerness to expand the congress's reach beyond Spain, inviting international attendees to join either on-site or virtually. While the conference does not present new data, it serves as a platform to review and update recent information, fostering an exchange of knowledge about different approaches to similar problems worldwide. The conversation concludes with anticipation of a continued partnership between the Prostate Cancer Foundation, UroToday, and SOGUG.

Charles Ryan: Hello, I'm with Dr. Cristina Suarez, here at the SOGUG Conference in Madrid. It's the 13th Annual SOGUG Conference, and I've had the pleasure to be a speaker at these conferences and the congresses in the past, and found them to be really delightful, as a really wonderful group of oncologists, and learners, and urologists, come together, radiation oncologists, come together to talk about the state of the art clinical care of in urologic cancer, with a particular focus on Spain, and this organization that's able to do so much.

Dr. Suarez, great to see you, Cristina. Tell us a little bit about the congress that's going on right now.

Cristina Suarez: Thanks, Charles. And so the conference, as you mentioned, is our 13th symposium. This year we have 44 speakers from different specialties. The majority of the business speakers are medical oncologists, but we also have urologists. We also have radiation oncologists, pathologists, and they are both international and national. They're all of great level. We are very happy with the level of the talks we're having, and with the level of the discussions we are having. So we are happy, very happy with the conference this year.

Charles Ryan: I find this to be a really delightful congress, really a high level of discourse, great science, great workshops. And I think that this is a congress that could certainly attract individuals from outside of Spain.

Cristina Suarez: Yes.

Charles Ryan: Of course, it's conducted in Spanish in some cases, and in English and others, with translation. So tell us about your goals, about whether or not this is a congress that you feel could grow a little bit larger than just to a Spanish audience.

Cristina Suarez: Yeah, absolutely. So we would love more people coming from everywhere. This year, we have 300 attendees on site, and 150 attendees virtually. But for people that are on site, we have translation. So it's that the language is not a matter. And we would be very happy to have more attendees, both virtually both on site. And we invite everybody, everybody's invited to come.

Charles Ryan: Are you presenting updates from the most recent congresses such as ESMO or urological congresses? And is anybody presenting new data here specific to the projects from SOGUG?

Cristina Suarez: Not new data. So we are just reviewing all the data. Of course, we speak about recent data, or just presented at ESMO, or whatever. But this is not organized as a post ESMO meeting or post ASCO meeting. But we are just updating everything.

Charles Ryan: Okay. Yes, ESMO was about a month and a half ago.

Cristina Suarez: Yeah.

Charles Ryan: So that's probably the freshest data that we have.

Cristina Suarez: Yeah.

Charles Ryan: And I know that you have many speakers who presented data at ESMO who are presenting their data here, or at least have over the past years that I've attended. Well, congratulations on this wonderful congress. It's really a fun congress, and I learn a lot every time I come. And always great to interact with the community of oncologists here in Spain, and talk about differences and similarities that we share around the world. And I think that's one of the key benefits to this Congress, is really being able to see how different countries approach similar problems given different resources.

Cristina Suarez: Thank you very much. Thanks for coming, and we hope to have you again next year.

Charles Ryan: Well, we look forward to a partnership between the Prostate Cancer Foundation and UroToday and SOGUG. And thank you for inviting us.

Cristina Suarez: Thank you for being here.
