Autopsy studies have confirmed the high prevalence of latent prostate cancer; however, only a certain portion of patients require definite treatment. Active surveillance is one of the treatment options which, according to national and international guidelines, should be offered to patients with newly diagnosed low-risk prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer remains among the most commonly diagnosed malignancies worldwide in men. In patients with low-risk prostate cancer, the risk of metastasis and mortality is very low; therefore, a tumor surveillance strategy can be used.

Long-term data demonstrate a higher oncological risk associated with active surveillance (AS) than initially anticipated.
